A modular system designed by MVRDV that enables multiple configurations to integrate furniture, landscape and new ways of inhabiting public space.
BARCODE is a modular urban furniture system designed by MVRDV that uses three complementary elements — TRIBUNE, DUNE and DESK — to generate different configurations for seating, gathering and interaction with the landscape. The combination, repetition and rotation of the modules allow their arrangement to be adapted to different scales, uses and conditions of each project, creating everything from areas for rest and gathering to compositions integrated into the urban landscape.
The system is based on a common modular logic that allows elements with different geometries and functions to be combined. TRIBUNE introduces a stepped configuration that encourages rest, gathering and observation, and incorporates a configurable tree opening that can be positioned on either side of the module to respond to specific installation requirements. DUNE develops a sculptural, flowing geometry that creates a continuous transition between seating, rest and landscape, enabling different forms of interaction and use. DESK adopts a monolithic configuration that integrates seating and a table into a single architectural volume, expanding its possibilities of use for eating, working or gathering.
The dimensions of the modules allow compositions of different scales to be developed. TRIBUNE and DUNE measure 200 × 240 × 80 cm, while DESK measures 200 × 120 × 80 cm. The dimensional relationship between the pieces facilitates their combination within the same intervention and allows different sequences, groupings and areas of use to be established.
BARCODE is made of concrete and can be specified in different finishes and colours, including etched white, etched beige, etched red, etched grey, etched black and the new green and yellow options, as well as our Eco-Grey formulation with recycled aggregates. This variety allows the material expression of the modules to be adapted to the architectural, landscape and chromatic characteristics of each project.
The collection brings the logic of modularity into the design of public space: the same family of elements can generate different configurations without losing formal coherence. In this way, BARCODE is not conceived as a sum of independent pieces, but as an open system capable of evolving according to context, incorporating furniture, vegetation, routes and areas for staying within a single composition. MVRDV's proposal thus expands the role of urban furniture as a design tool and directly connects it with the creation of the contemporary landscape.
