Zorrotzaurre

The Zorrotzaurre project, in the city of Bilbao, is a major urban regeneration operation. As part of a comprehensive and sustainable plan, this phase recovers a deteriorated area next to the canal in order to convert it into a pedestrian path on the right bank of the Deusto canal. Port cities such as Bilbao have new ways of relating to their water fronts as a consequence of the relocation of industrial and logistical facilities far from their centres. This generates new opportunities for landscaping the fronts.
The project is a 20-meter wide and over two-kilometer long promenade on two levels. The one closest to the water has walking areas and access to the water, linking the user with the port's historical past. The upper level, more suitable for staying and with trees, hosts various activity nodes such as plazas, rest areas, children's play areas, covered spaces that protect from the weather, and a small climbing wall that takes advantage of the existing wall and slope. The vegetation environmentally enhances the estuary's ecotone, recovering natural dynamics and regenerating native habitats while protecting the promenade from vehicle noise.

Escofet collaborates on the project by producing the protective edge between the canal and the promenade. Using obliquely cut gray pieces, which in their geometry incorporate an overhang that also serves as seating. Additionally, slab benches on steel legs and some rectangular parallelepiped benches in black are supplied. Finally, several units of the Morella Bin litter bin dot the landscape.
