The Gaudí tile is an outdoor pavement that was reissued in 1997 based on the original relief of the hydraulic mosaic that Antoni Gaudí created in 1904 and which was manufactured by Escofet.
The hexagonal Gaudí tile projects in thirds the figures that evoke the sinuousness of a marine background: the starfish, the ammonite, and an alga of the genus Sargassum.
In homage to the architect, the city of Barcelona paved the sidewalks of Paseo de Gràcia with this model, in which the relief is presented inverted compared to the original, thus improving its resistance to the wear and tear that comes with its use as exterior pavement.
The "Gaudí mosaic tile" is a magnificent example of the architect´s genius and his work, the convergence of two constants in his work: geometry and symbolism. The shape and the images of these tiles remind us of Gaudi´s thought, based on the meticulous observation of the forms and structures found in nature, «nature that has always been my master». If the six-sided profiles remind us of the cells of a honeycomb, the bas-relief figures that appear on the tiles evoke the sinuousness of a marine background.
The urban tiles sit on a rigid concrete slab of 15 to 18 cm, designed for pedestrian use with ocasional vehicle traffic service, poured on a soil sub-base.
