Palma

1987

Concrete two-layer dry-cast paver that can be arranged in different ways and grid densities, leaving the joint more or less open to the growth of grass.

Avaible in two formats, Palma and Palmax2. The second paver doubles the dimenions of the first, providing the opportunity to combine both formats in countless compositional options.
The open joints, directionality, and two dimensions are factors that define the pavement suitable for pedestrian traffic areas and occasional light vehicle passage.

The design of Palma paver allows for the creation of gradual grid patterns with percentages of paving stones ranging from 100% to 60%, adapting to different requirements for rainwater absorption. It also facilitates the combination with grass or sand surfaces in the construction of “soft” boundaries between built and natural surfaces.

The unique and irregular format of the paving stone, with numerous inclination angles on its vertical faces, gives the system excellent mechanical performance and load distribution.

Palma was created by the authors for the pavement of the monumental area around the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca.

The paving stones, 10 cm thick, are placed on a leveled sand bed of 4 to 6 cm, which in turn extends over a previously compacted and leveled soil base with a minimum thickness of 20 cm, or concrete (H-200) with a thickness of 15 cm. Fine sand is used for filling and confinement.
