Santuario de Meritxell

Canillo, Andorra 1978

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell is located in the Andorran town of Canillo. The original Romanesque structure was destroyed by a fire in 1972. The new building project was commissioned by the architect Ricardo Bofill and it officially opened in 1978.

Bofill presented a sanctuary conceived with the intention of creating a large space that fitted harmonously into the landscape. The new structure was inspired by the original sources of Alberti and Palladio, and is also influenced by Catalan-Mudéjar style.
