Sir David Chipperfield wins 2023 Pritzker Prize
Lauded british architect Sir David Chipperfield has been awarded the 2023 Pritzker Prize, architecture’s most prestigious award worldwide. Chipperfield is known for his commitment to quality and sustainability, and also for the skilful integration of his projects into each urban context.
At Escofet, we are very proud to have partnered with David Chipperfield Architects on America’s Cup Building ‘Veles e Vents’ building, completed in 2006 in Valencia, and widely considered one of Chipperfield’s best designs. Escofet manufactured both the building’s façade elements and the bespoke urban elements around the Building.
We supported David Chipperfield in designing a spectacular structure that ingeniously responds to the competition requirements and seamlessly merges into Valencia's urban landscape. Chipperfield’s solution skilfully absorbs and resolves the different building heights between the city and the sea through a series of parallel public promenades along the canal, linked via stairs and lookout terraces.
The building’s lower level parking features an indented section façade in dark grey pre-cast concrete stone manufactured by Escofet. This enclosure is punctured by a series of diagonal stairs that link the canal promenade to the building´s ground level terraces. Escofet also designed, produced and installed several urban elements distributed along the waterside, such as number of Socrates benches, Net ashtrays and bespoke oversized planters – all sharing the same material and finish as in the abovementioned parking façade.
Escofet is extremely proud to have collaborated with David Chipperfield on the America´s Cup ‘Veles e Vents’ design in Valencia and sends him our heartfelt congratulations on his well-deserved Pritzker Prize. His work has inspired and enriched countless lives around the world, and we are grateful to have been able to make history with him.
